Our Cattle

 

Our county isn’t called Sweet Grass for nothing.

Hay Mama beef comes from cattle who spend their lives grazing on the - very literally - sweet grass of Sweet Grass County. We believe there’s something in this grass, along with of course breeding techniques and other variables, that ultimately makes our product unique. We challenge you to have one of our burgers and not feel like you’ve had a beef epiphany.

Our cattle are Black Angus crossed with Simmental, which yields a good-sized animal that is able to thrive in the often harsh Montana winters. They graze freely over thousands of acres of grassland, and spend their entire lives roaming the hillsides as they grow to full size over two and a half years.

While the cattle benefit from eating healthfully outdoors, we humans also benefit from their diet. Research shows that grass-fed beef has higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, whose various benefits include reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke and helping with of hypertension issues.

Our cattle share their pastures at the base of the  Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains with abundant herds of elk, deer and antelope, as well as healthy populations of dozens of different bird species. Beyond benefiting our cattle, a grazing lifestyle also produces healthy habitats for grassland bird species. Taking over the grazing duties once performed by bison, cattle also are an essential management tool for the prairie as they eat invasive plants and create the necessary earth disturbance that helps grasslands thrive.

Audubon Certified Bird Friendly Land

The Audubon Conservation Ranching program certifies that our cattle graze on land managed with bird friendly practices. Prairie grassland bird species are in severe decline largely due to the conversion of cattle ranches to crops like corn and soy. Having a healthy and diverse bird population and doing all we can to support our resident, migratory, and breeding species is one of our key tenets.

Western Sustainability Exchange

We are a Certified program in the Western Sustainability Exchange, a nonprofit that “pursues environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, and community well-being as interlinked goals.” The WSE Certification ensures that an operation adheres to the following principles: treats animals humanely, eliminates hormones and sub-therapeutic antibiotics, significantly reduces or eliminates chemicals used in production practices, and protects open space, wildlife habitat, and water and soil quality. We share these priorities with WSE and are happy to partner with them to help evangelize how critical it is that we all eat grass-fed beef that is raised humanely and limit the practice of raising cattle on feedlots.
